Recommended Shopify image sizes

Shopify's hard limits are generous: up to 5000x5000 pixels and under 20MB per image. In practice, you rarely need the maximum.

  • Product images: 2048x2048 is a strong default for most themes, large enough for zoom, small enough to stay fast.
  • Collection tiles: 1500x1500 or similar square works well for grids and featured collections.
  • Banners & slideshows: aim for 2000–2400px wide, exported at 2x the display width used in your hero section.
  • Blog featured images: widescreen 16:9 (e.g. 2000x1125) keeps your blog index and article pages consistent.

How to fix blurry images in Dawn and Shopify sections

Blur happens when the uploaded image doesn't have enough real pixels for the space it's displayed in, or when an app compresses too aggressively before upload.

  • Measure the rendered width of your image in the theme editor and export at roughly 2x that width.
  • Avoid uploading tiny images into full-width sections. Dawn will stretch them and they'll look soft.
  • Use this resizer to normalize images to consistent widths before uploading, rather than relying on Shopify to handle everything.

We're preparing a deeper guide on Dawn blur troubleshooting and theme-specific examples, which will live under our Shopify image guides section.

Best aspect ratios for Shopify product images

Aspect ratio is what keeps your collection pages from looking messy. Mixing tall, wide, and square images in the same grid usually leads to jumpy layouts, and sometimes blur when Shopify has to upscale.

  • 1:1 (square): best for most general catalog grids and when your products don't have a strong vertical orientation.
  • 4:5 (tall portrait): a good fit for fashion, apparel, and portrait-style product photography.
  • 3:4: similar to 4:5 but slightly less tall; useful when you want a bit more room for background or props.
  • 16:9: ideal for hero-style product images, lifestyle shots, and blog headers.

The key is consistency: pick one ratio for your main product photography and normalize everything to match. This resizer's aspect-ratio mode is built exactly for that job.

Why image size affects conversion

Product image quality and sizing directly impact conversion rates:

  • Performance and conversion: Optimized, consistently sized images load faster on mobile and desktop, reducing bounce rates and improving search rankings
  • Visual consistency: Uniformly sized images create a professional, trustworthy appearance that builds customer confidence. For additional trust signals, consider using our Trust Badge Generator to add reassurance messaging to your product pages.
  • Image quality and detail: High-resolution source images enable zoom functionality and remain clear at thumbnail sizes, reducing purchase hesitation

Mobile vs desktop image considerations

Shopify stores need images that work well on both mobile and desktop devices:

  • Mobile-first approach: Since most Shopify traffic is mobile, use square images (1:1) that work well across devices and compress files to reduce size without quality loss
  • Responsive optimization: Shopify automatically serves device-appropriate sizes, but starting with well-optimized source images ensures quality across all display contexts

FAQ

Is this Shopify image resizer really client-side only?

Yes. We use the Canvas API in your browser to read, resize, and export images. The ZIP file is assembled locally and offered as a download, and nothing is uploaded to our servers.

What image formats can I upload and export?

You can upload JPG, PNG, and WebP files. For exports, you can choose JPG (ideal for product photos) or PNG (better for graphics or where transparency is needed).

How big should my product images be for zoom to work?

For most themes, 2048x2048 is enough for a good zoom experience. If your theme supports very large zoom panels and you sell high-detail products, you might go up to 3000x3000.

Will this fix blurry collection images in Dawn automatically?

It can't change your theme settings, but it gives you the correct export sizes. If you match your exports to roughly 2x the display width used in your Dawn sections, blur should be eliminated.

Can I use this for non-Shopify stores?

Yes. The presets are opinionated around Shopify, but the canvas resizer and ZIP export will work fine for any storefront as long as you respect that platform's size recommendations.

Does this tool compress my images too much?

JPG exports use a quality slider so you can pick the trade-off you want. The defaults aim to balance clarity and file size; you can increase quality if you see visible artifacts.
